MANUEL LÓPEZ HERRERA
1946 . Madrid (Spain)

The paintings of López Herrera are an unforgettable beauty for the design and the colour, also for the suggestive scenes where the experiences of the characters occur. These characters are perhaps the most emblematic aspect of his works, not only for their special features but also for their postures and particular way of addressing the spectator. The combination of all we have just described brings to López Herrera’s output a unique and unmistakable character, and on this the painter, throughout his long and extensive trajectory, has elaborated a subtle evolution which opens new perspectives on his personal universe.
For the artist, harmony, beauty and rigour are complementary virtues of a certain air of secrecy which brings an undeniable evocative trait to his work. Inhabitants of unreal spaces, arranged in levels of colour where memories float freely, his characters appear before us as bearers of a mystery to be solved. In this game of associations and visual communication the reflection on art and its ways of expression acquire a privileged place in the works of López Herrera. In his works we habitually find reproductions of works of other painters, on occasions clearly in homage and in others as subtle irony which converts to a new point of reflection in the spectator.
The paintings of López Herrera catches our attention for all that it possesses, and has been resumed by Jaime Rodriguez Martinez in the following terms “like the silence in the night, the mystery covers each and every object of the setting, weightless and motionless, whose shapes keep the deepest and most surreal secrets of his characters López Herrera reveals an unknown form of humanity beneath his aesthetic humour-brushes”. The work of López Herrera activates the perceptive capacity of the spectator, due to this game between showing and suggesting. We are therefore confronted with stories which do not directly disclose all, but are profoundly intimate for the beauty of the aesthetic design and the fascination caused by the magic of the subtlely unreal.
